![]() ![]() ![]() Experience with CNC plasma cutting is becoming one of those requirements. Manufacturers are demanding exposure to more advanced technologies and skills from the prospective employees coming out of local high schools and technical colleges. In most cases the new user puts the blame on the plasma cutting system, yet after review the issues is often consumables (nozzles and shields especially) damaged on the first pierce (usually piercing too close) and the ensuing poor cut quality that makes them think that is the best the plasma cutter can do, well that is not something Hypertherm wants to be associated with! (I am retired from Hypertherm, but work with them as a consultant) When full function height control at least becomes available for the Langmuir (as an option) with posts showing the clear advantages….then I’ll be satisfied. Torchmate® 4 x 4 Ready-Pak® CNC Cutting Table ![]() I do, however hear from at least a couple dozen plasma cnc users a month that complain about the poor cut quality and shorter than advertised consumable life (some on this forum). As long as these users know the advantages of height control as well as machines that can fit a 4’ wide plate, then I have done my job. It is my position to help educate users of plasma cutting equipment. I am ready to help them understand the critical functions and operation of height control systems as needed! Best regards, Jim Colt It is rather easy to do, especially on a small footprint, and I am glad that a few users on this forum are working out the details to add height control. CNC machines that move plasma torches should have control of the x, y and z axis to accurately set pierce height, pierce delay and cut height. Lastly, height control (from my 41 years of experience working for the worlds largest producers of plasma cutters) is the biggest parameter of the plasma cutting process that has heavy influence on cut quality and consumable life. I understand the limitations of shop size, the need for small parts and one -off quantities, and budget………for those reasons I steer potential buyers to Langmuir. Steel, aluminum and stainless come in standard sizes with minimum widths of 4 feet, so you must shear or somehow cut down the sheet / plate size before it can be used. The only reason I don’t recommend 2 x 2 cnc plasma tables is the limitation of the material size, and in fact I have owned two 2 x 2 as well as a 2 x 4 tables over the years. ![]()
